St Matthew's Nursery

Nursery 6

St Matthew's Nursery provides children with a welcoming, safe and stimulating environment where children are able to enjoy learning, gain independence and grow in confidence.

Our nursery class is located within the infant building and is self-contained, consisting of two main large rooms, child-friendly toilet facilities and a secure outdoor play area. Our dedicated team consists of a qualified early years teacher along with experienced nursery support staff.

We give priority to creating an exciting learning environment for our nursery children. We want them to learn through purposeful, practical activities so we take great care to provide a wealth of opportunities, both indoors and out, for children to explore and investigate the world about them. Through art, music, stories and imaginative play we provide activities that help to develop the children's ability to listen and observe as well as to use their imagination. They are also introduced to numbers, language and sounds for reading and writing, which they can apply and practise within the many activities provided within the setting. Children are introduced to the whole school phonics scheme ‘Read write inc’ through the accredited Nursery programme.

It is our belief at St Matthew's that children’s Nursery experience should be led by their own interests. We know that children learn best when they are happy, healthy, safe and secure, when their interests are followed and when they enjoy positive relationships with the adults caring for them.

In the Nursery, children learn predominantly through play. We seek to achieve a balance between adult-led and child-initiated interactions and activities from which our children can choose freely and independently select and use resources.
